Every year forests are destroyed on a large scale - 10.000 km² in Europe
- 100.000 km² in tropical/subtropical regions
- Up to 100.000 km² in North-America
- Several million km² of savannah
Globally 1 million hectares are destroyed every year. This is 150 times the size of Switzerland. 900 million tons of CO2 (=20% of global greenhouse emissions)are released into the atmosphere. Rainforest clearance triples above figure. Daily tens of animal and plant species become extinct. The loss of human lives and the burden on national economics is increasingly a major concern. According to the UN Global Fire Monitoring Centre (GFMC) the economical damages between 1980-2003 amount to USD 50 billion.
It is assumed that an early detection could lower these damages by the factor 5000.
